American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation at First Night 2017
It has always been a part of First Night’s mission to provide an accessible, healthy, family-friendly festival of the arts in Burlington each New Year’s Eve. Beginning with First Night 2017 on December 31, 2016, we’re broadening this mission to make a wider range of performances accessible to community members who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf Blind.
In past years, the First Night artistic director and Programming Committee have selected up to eight (8) performances for which American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation has been provided. We’re changing that policy moving forward to allow members of the deaf community to choose the specific performance(s) they would like to attend with the benefit of ASL interpretation.
First Night’s ability to provide ASL interpreters is limited by the number and schedules of interpreters available during the holidays. For this reason, First Night Burlington asks that any person who desires ASL services for any performance at First Night 2017 must request an interpreter in writing no later than Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 5 pm. All requests for ASL services will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis from the pool of available interpreters. Sorry, First Night cannot guarantee the availability of ASL interpreter for any given event or performance.
Questions about First Night’s new ASL policy should be directed to Tom Ayres at (802) 863-6005 or by email to [email protected] Office hours: 9 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
