Volunteers are the heart of First Night – our link to the community and our artists. Help us make this celebration of creativity and community spirit happen!
Our volunteer program includes:
- A First Night button in exchange for 3 hours of work, allowing you access to all events before and after your volunteer shift.
- Flexible shifts, providing plenty of time for you to enjoy your favorites among our extraordinary line-up of artists.
- City Market member worker hours for City Market member workers.
Which of these jobs is most appealing to YOU?
They’re all important, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your first choice. The earlier you sign up, the better your chance of getting the assignment you want most!
The best way to define a site assistant is “Jack of All Trades!” Rub elbows with artists and their fans while you help the Site Manager run a smooth show. Check buttons, guide crowds in and out of performances, and answer festival-goers’ questions. We need more Site Assistants than any other volunteer. Comfortable with directing people and flexible about what you do? Be a Site Assistant!
Help us sell First Night buttons and tickets! First Night’s Pop-Up Box Office, location to be announced on October 15, from December 1 through First Night, Tuesday through Saturday, with several shift opportunities. If you work well in a fast paced environment (especially on First Night), like to provide service with a smile, are good with numbers, and have some retail experience, this is for you! There are often phones to answer and various projects to help out with for variety. Buttons and tickets are also sold at Will Call in the Flynn Lobby on First Night.
Enjoy working with children and families? Volunteer at Burlington City Arts Firehouse Gallery and help budding artists create their own masterpieces. Or help herd the crowds at Edmund’s Cafeteria where artists will create beautiful face art for the young and the young at heart.
Dancing Dragons Parade
Become a dragon with your friends, co-workers, or family for a truly transformative New Year’s Eve experience. We welcome anyone who wants to help create a lively show as it travels down Church Street. Prefer to be in the background? We need parade assistants to help direct the crowds as the parade makes its way down Church Street. A great way to volunteer with family members and friends!
Help out in the First Night Office, where all First Night 2017 preparations are happening, both before and during First Night. Before First Night, help out with selling buttons, answering phones, processing orders, preparing artist laminates, assembling signboards and more. On First Night: sell buttons, answer countless phone calls or help with off-site errands as a runner. Volunteering in the office puts you right at the heart of First Night. The office is not open evenings or on weekends prior to First Night.
Pickup & Delivery
Have a car and want to be out delivering buttons & boxes, or running errands for us? This is a flexible but very limited job for those who want to help us out before or during the event.
Help out at the UVM/Gutterson Parking lot (next to the Patrick Gym) where there is free parking for First Night attendees. Be the first face First Night revelers encounter as you help with boarding the shuttles, then ride along answering questions and providing commentary as you go (not to worry–we’ll provide you with a “script” that will help). If being a tour guide appeals, this is the job for you!
